Extra Credit Opportunities: You can always do extra independent reading for extra credit, or apply to a scholarship, internship, or contest. Over the break, you can also complete an extra credit project based on Kendrick Lamar's video for "Humble." You need to analyze the use of Allusion (an indirect reference to something of cultural significance, often used to create a bond with the reader or to connect different ideas, like a simile or metaphor.) and the central ideas in the song and video. Your response can be a standard written paragraph or short essay, or you can create a creative response, for example, writing your own rap that uses allusions or other literary strategies.

Hi everyone! A new extra credit opportunity is now available. (You can already get extra credit by doing extra Independent Reading or by giving a Book Talk when you finish a book you'd like to recommend to the class.) From now on, if you apply to any of the scholarships, special programs, or writing contests that I have posted in my room, you will receive extra credit when you show me the application! I can also help you with the applications to increase your chances of getting accepted.

Final Draft of Argument Essay on disobedience is now due on Monday. Use the Sample Essay (Which received a Level 7) and the Rubric to help revise your essay to make sure you get a good score.

Week of March 13-17
Hello everyone,
The marking period ends this Friday, March 17th, and parent/teacher conferences are next week on Thursday (after school) and Friday (afternoon). Please check your grade on Pupilpath and make sure you are up to date on all of your assignments! Your teachers are all available during office hours (4th period) on Wednesday and Thursday if you need to speak to them about makeup work.
Monday
Periods 1, 5, and 7:
Classwork: Gallery Walk of final drafts of Injustice Letters. Complete reflection and vote for your favorite letter for each category.
Homework: 10 Pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one Writing Strategy from your book.
Periods 2 and 6:
Classwork: Read and score sample synthesis essays using the scoring guidelines and rubric. Then, score your own essay using the rubric and compare to Ms. Atwill's score for your essay. Identify what you will do to improve your score next time.
Homework: 10 Pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one Writing Strategy from your book.
Tuesday: No School, Happy Snow Day!
Wednesday
Periods 1, 5, and 7:
Classwork: Read pages 1-6 from The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Begin KWL charts based on our reactions and questions to the text.
Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one writing strategy from your book AND look up one question from the W section of your KWL charts and record what you learned--even if you still don’t have a complete answer. Don't forget to include your sources!
Periods 2 and 6:
Classwork: Review Multiple Choice Strategies. Complete questions 1-13 from the new multiple choice packet.
Homework: Complete questions 14-17 from multiple choice packet.
Thursday
Periods 1, 5, and 7:
Classwork: Read p. 7-14 of Henrietta Lacks. Add to KWL charts and discuss how the author draws connections between different events.
Homework: Write ½ page: How does Skloot unfold events in this text and what connections does she draw among these events?
Periods 2 and 6:
Classwork: Complete questions 31-43 from multiple choice packet.
Homework: 10 Pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one Writing Strategy from your book. Multiple Choice Quiz tomorrow! Target Score: 7/12

Classwork: Complete self-assessment of Injustice Letter, and compare to your actual grade. Make a to-do list of what you need to accomplish to improve the letter, based on teacher and peer feedback.
Homework: Read your letter out loud to someone else, and have them write down feedback for you on your letter.
Periods 2 and 6
Classwork: Begin Synthesis Essay. Read through sources A-F and determine if they are pro/con/qualify/neutral.
Homework: Rough draft of a synthesis essay based on today's prompt and sources.
Wednesday
Periods 1, 5 and 7
Classwork: Complete a peer review of your injustice letter.
Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one Writing Strategy from your book.
Periods 2 and 6
Classwork: Read the rubric for the Synthesis Essay, and grade your essay and see what you need to do to improve it.
Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one Writing Strategy from your book. (And if you didn't complete your Synthesis essay draft, complete it tonight!)
Thursday

Classwork: Meet in computer lab. Using the revision and editing checklists, make any changes you need to your Injustice Letters.
Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one Writing Strategy from your book.
Periods 2 and 6
Classwork: Read and annotate sources A-F from the new Synthesis Essay on Monolingualism.
Homework: Create an outline for your Synthesis essay for tomorrow's test.
Friday
Periods 1, 5 and 7
Classwork: Meet in the computer lab. Make any final changes to your Injustice Letter.
Homework: Make any final changes to your Injustice Letter, due at 10:00 PM Friday Night! There will be a gallery walk on Monday, so make sure your work is ready to be put up on the wall!
