ELA Regents Prep on Tuesday, 8:30-3:00!

If you are taking the ELA Regents on Wednesday, please come see me for ELA Regents prep at some point on Tuesday. If you are taking a Regents exam on Tuesday, stop by before or after your exam. We will not be in our regular classroom because it's being used for exams; I'll post the room number on the door on Tuesday morning.

Hi Everyone! For those of you in periods 2 and 6 who want to see a sample proposal, you can take a look at this one here. This isn't necessarily the way yours needs to look, but yours should be at least as detailed. If your project changes after you write the proposal, that's fine! You will explain what you changed and why in the reflection.

For each question you missed, write a paragraph about what mistake you made, or what information you missed that would help you get the correct answer next time, and why the correct answer is the best choice. Corrections due Friday.

Classwork: Write and complete your goal for the day, based on your project calendar.

Welcome to the final marking period of the year! This is a very short marking period, only five weeks long, so it's extremely important to stay on top of all of your work and not fall behind.

All of your teachers are available during office hours (4th period) on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so please take advantage of that opportunity to check in to make sure you are on track.

Monday

Periods 1 and 7:

Classwork: Watch the film Henrietta Lacks. Take KWL notes and discuss topics from the story that you are interested in learning more about, as well as topics that are complex and do not have a clear answer. These topics will help you generate Socratic Seminar discussion questions.

Homework: Write two Socratic Seminar discussion questions based on issues from the Henrietta Lacks story.

Periods 5 and 6:

Classwork: No class (Community Meeting)

Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and one response on a writing strategy from your book.

Period 2:

Classwork: Begin working on your Final Project. Receive the instructions and the calendar. Brainstorm potential project ideas with your classmates.

Homework: Narrow down your brainstormed list to 3-5 potential projects.

Tuesday

Periods 1 and 7:

Classwork: Write down your classmates' Socratic Seminar discussion questions, and have a mini Socratic Seminar on the discussion questions we have created, as well as any topics that arise during our discussion.

Homework: Write ½ page on what you learned from your classmates in today’s discussion.

Period 2:

Classwork: Analyze your Rhetorical Analysis essay feedback from your teacher and your peers. Do you agree with all of it? Select one paragraph to revise to a Level 9.

Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and write a response on one Writing Strategy from you book. Your revised body paragraph is due Monday!

Period 5:

Week of April 3-7

Extra Credit Opportunities: You can always do extra independent reading for extra credit, or apply to a scholarship, internship, or contest. Over the break, you can also complete an extra credit project based on Kendrick Lamar's video for "Humble." You need to analyze the use of Allusion (an indirect reference to something of cultural significance, often used to create a bond with the reader or to connect different ideas, like a simile or metaphor.) and the central ideas in the song and video. Your response can be a standard written paragraph or short essay, or you can create a creative response, for example, writing your own rap that uses allusions or other literary strategies.

Monday

Periods 1, 5 and 7:

Classwork: Read p. 51-54 in Henrietta Lacks. Continue our KWL charts.

Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and one response on a Writing Strategy from your book.

Periods 2 and 6:

Hi everyone! A new extra credit opportunity is now available. (You can already get extra credit by doing extra Independent Reading or by giving a Book Talk when you finish a book you'd like to recommend to the class.) From now on, if you apply to any of the scholarships, special programs, or writing contests that I have posted in my room, you will receive extra credit when you show me the application! I can also help you with the applications to increase your chances of getting accepted.

Classwork: Identify Skloot's main point in p. 32-34 of Henrietta Lacks. (You must get consent before performing risky experiments on humans.) Evaluate the evidence she uses to prove her claim by determining if it is both relevant (related to the topic) and sufficient (strong enough to support the claim.)

Homework: 10 pages of Independent Reading, and one response on a writing strategy from your book. Quiz tomorrow on p. 31-35, bring your text and your notes!
Periods 2 and 6:

Classwork: First draft of Argument Essays due. Work on developing stronger analysis of your evidence by using any of the following:
-Discuss why the evidence is important to the debate
-Consider points of view other than my own
-Discuss the implications of the evidence and the issue within modern society

Use the Quadrant Technique to develop your evidence.

Classwork: Read p. 42-46 of Henrietta Lacks, and identify and evaluate the claims made by the Lacks family based on the evidence given in p. 44-46.

Homework: Read p. 47-48 of Henrietta Lacks. Write ½ p: How are the Lacks family’s claims in this section supported by the evidence from p. 42-46? If you didn't do last night's homework of researching one question and writing down the answer you found and the source, please do that tonight as well!

Periods 2 and 6: 

Classwork:  Break down prompt for tomorrow's exam, and brainstorm ideas and create an outline. We paraphrased his characterization of America like this: It seems impractical for Americans to be united, because they come from all different backgrounds, but because their system of government is built on the rights of man, everyone is equal. Poor people and rich people have equal rights, and there is no reason for people to fight.

Homework: Study for your exam tomorrow! You will have the entire class period to write your argument essay. You will not be able to use any notes, so make sure you study your outline carefully! Final Draft of Argument Essay on disobedience is now due on Monday. Use the Sample Essay (Which received a Level 7) and the Rubric to help revise your essay to make sure you get a good score.

Thursday

Classwork: Read and annotate texts for an Argument Essay.

Homework: Using the notes from today’s readings, complete an outline for the argument essay you will write in class tomorrow. Tomorrow’s essay will count as a test, so be prepared!

Periods 2 and 6

Classwork: Read par. 20-25 of "Hope, Despair and Memory." Double Entry Notes on Writing Strategies and Central Ideas.

Homework: Write at least two questions for a Socratic Seminar on this text. You can connect it to other texts, current events or history.

Here are the assignments for the week. We have a very short marking period--including this week, there are only two weeks left before the semester ends, so make sure you turn in all of your work on time, and see your teachers during office hours if you're not sure what you need to do!

Periods 2 and 6

Classwork: Socratic Seminar comparing Malcolm X and Leslie Marmon Silko.

Homework: Complete Socratic Seminar reflection questions.

Friday

Periods 1, 5 and 7

Classwork: Complete the jigsaw analysis of the argument essay texts. Using the argument essay template, begin an outline for your essay.

Homework: Finish your essay outline. You will be writing your essay in class on Tuesday, so make sure it is ready! Also, reading logs are due on Tuesday, so make sure yours is finished by then.

Periods 2 and 6

Classwork: Begin reading Elie Wiesel's Nobel Prize Speech: "Hope, Despair and Memory." Read par. 1-4 and take notes on central ideas.

Homework: Read paragraphs 5-7 of the speech and come in with a list of central ideas from this section.

Author's Toolbox: Imagery

Definition: Using sensory details (touch, taste, sight, sound, smell) to describe vivid scenes and reveal the tone.

Example: “Her feet were swollen and hurting. Her back was damp with sweat.”



Homework: Write ½ page: How does the imagery Alvarez uses in paragraphs 9-15 affect the text?

2nd and 6th Periods:
